Why Snookies?

Josh: When you want ice cream, you get ice cream.

Grace: Snookies is a summer classic. It’s a tiny mom & pop ice cream shop in Beaverdale and it’s only open during the warmer months. People actually camp out before it opens for the first time each summer. It’s that good.

The Meal

Josh: Tonight I got a chocolate malt. I usually get a “Blizzard” type of ice cream but this establishment is called “Snookies Malt Shop” so I had a malt.

The difference between a shake and a malt (for you who do not know) is that a malt uses malted milk. Okay we got that out of the way.

My chocolate malt was great! It tasted like a malt should and it was creamy and yummy. I’m not sure how else to describe a malt besides that.

Grace: No meal, just ice cream. Snookies has everything you could ever ask for; malts, shakes, “blizzard”-like concoctions, sundaes, cones…you get it. They also have free pup cones for dogs. Adorable.

I got a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup blizzard situation. It’s so simple – vanilla ice cream blended with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups – but it’s so damn good. Rich, sweet, way too big, everything you need in an ice cream treat.

Atmosphere, Service, Price

Grace: Snookies has counter service, a big outdoor patio with a variety of seating options, and a small indoor space if you need a break from weather. It’s super down-home; there are posters of local high school teams, handwritten menus, photos of news articles and regular customers, you get the picture.

Everyone there is super sweet and very friendly, and prices are extremely reasonable. It’s a great place for a quick date or (I assume) a family outing.  There was a large family there when we were there celebrating a birthday, which seems like a great option if you don’t want a dessert mess in your house.

Snookies is a Des Moines classic and I think you should go there ASAP. Make sure you bring cash!

Josh: If you’ve noticed a trend, I gave Van Dees and Black Cat a score of 5/5 too. Why? Because local ice cream establishments are the best. Each one is so unique and different and it’s fun to visit local ice cream shops in random towns. Yes places like Marble Slab, Dairy Queen, and Cold Stone (my personal favorite ice cream chain) are great but there is something about a local ice cream joint that makes me happy. If I was in any random town and I wanted ice cream and my choices were between a local ice cream shop or a Dairy Queen, I’d choose the local ice cream shop 10/10 times.

Okay back to Snookies: It’s nice and stuff! It has a bigger patio and a small inside area as well. They also offer free puppy cones (awww) and swinging chairs!!!! If you’re going to learn one thing from me today it’ll be that I love swinging chairs. I want three in my home: one on the front porch, one on the deck, and one inside my home if the weather is less than ideal.

Sadly, friends, the swinging chairs were booked so we settled for over-sized chairs. Nevertheless, we persisted.

Come to Snookies if you’re in the Beaverdale area. You will not be disappointed.
