Why Mullets?

Mullets, Mullets Des Moines, Principal Park, Baseball fields, baseball park, des moines baseball, des moines food, mullets, mullet

Grace: We were at an I-Cubs game and decided that a nice walk and dinner on a patio would be nice! We’d tried Mullets once before and didn’t like it, but decided to give it another shot. Glad we did!

Josh: Grip invited us to an Iowa Cubs game (don’t worry, he will not be writing a post like last time. He’s been banned). He actually didn’t even show up to the game. So Grace and I got our free tickets and went to dinner afterwards.

The Meal

Grace: We started with Sweet Po-Tato Tots. They’re so good! You can get savory (with Sriracha) or sweet (with brown sugar); we got savory. Literally just tater tots made with sweet potatoes, salted and served with a side of Sriracha, but they’re so good.

My meal was a Grilled Chicken & Avocado Po Boy and fries. The fries were fine, nothing special. The sandwich was delicious! Grilled chicken, avocado, tomato, lettuce, swiss, and some ranch-y tasting spread on a delicious hoagie roll. It was great, not greasy at all, good portion size. That’s all I have to say about that!

Josh: Grace and I were here once before. It was during winter and I wasn’t so fond of it.The food seemed greasy and I wasn’t really into it. Maybe it was cold and I was a little miserable? That could be honestly.

Anyway I got the “Big Mullet”. I honestly had no idea what it was referencing at all. Once we got our food, I had this conversation:

Josh: Hey! There’s a piece of bread in the middle like a Big Mac!

Grace: …..*giving me that “are you serious” look*

Josh: ….

Grace: …

Josh: OHHH A Big Mullet! I get it!

Grace: *Probably wondering how I’m a functioning adult*

The burger was good! It sure tasted better than a Big Mac so I have to give it props for that. It even had a secret sauce and everything. The burger was good, but not the best I’ve ever had. If I were to go back I may try something new. The onion rings were very greasy. They were the stringy onion rings and not the big circular ones. I feel like most people have a preference between the stringy onion straws and actual onion rings. I’m an onion rings guy so the straws weren’t doing it for me. I actually preferred Grace’s fries and I wouldn’t get the rings again.

The appetizer was the best part of the meal. They were sweet-potato tater-tots! That’s pretty good in it’s own right but these were drizzled in salt and had a side of Sriracha to dip them in. I could have had those as my main meal. They were pretty darn tasty!

Atmosphere, Service, Price

Grace: Mullets has a two-level patio, and we were lucky enough to score a table on the second story. It was a beautiful night that night, and we got to watch the sun set over the river as we ate. Aww. Service was nice; we were there a little later in the evening and I felt a little rushed at some points but overall nothing terrible. Prices are great, they played good music, everyone was friendly. It’s a short walk from Principal Park and not too far from Gray’s Lake either, which is handy. No complaints!

View from the deck

You should definitely go for the patio alone. It’s beautiful up there.

Josh: Do you see that view? Do you see that Des Moines Skyline? I’m pretty sure there is a bald eagle there somewhere in the distance. Spreading its wings and spreading freedom. Murica.

The beautiful day + the baseball game before hand + the view made this experience amazing. I want to come here again this summer, sit back on the patio, and enjoy the ride.

Josh HATES meatloaf more than anything (you should ask him about it sometime) but that sounds strangely good. I’ll keep it in mind! And oh Grip. We love Grip…but that post… *crying laughing emoji*
